Volunteer GAL Program

"A lot of times in the system you don’t feel like anybody is in your corner. All these decisions are being made about you, and you don’t have a voice. It was nice to have someone sit there and actually listen to what I had to say, and offer advice."

Heather Weddle,
former foster youth

Heather, now a junior in college studying theater, attributes much of her success to her volunteer Guardians ad Litem, Howard and Norma Petzold. Read her story here.

Oconee County

In 2008, 69 Oconee County volunteers were serving as advocates for 194 abused or neglected children.

Our volunteers are ordinary people who want to make a difference for an abused child.

Next training session starts:
September 14, 2009.

Michael Seen and Heard

"Michael" is one of the Forgotten Children: Children who have been abused or neglected and are now living in foster care. In South Carolina, over 5000 children are living in foster care at any given time.

These children need volunteer advocates who will stand up for them, so that they can be seen and heard. The Oconee County Volunteer GAL Program trains citizens to be positive, effective advocates for children, so that they will not be forgotten. If you have 4-6 hours per month to give to a child, you could be that person who makes a difference.
